Let's Be Honest... Sponsored Content on Hello October

Today I wanted to address something that has been close to my heart for a long time now. I follow both blog readers and bloggers on various social media and there's no denying the discussion of PR samples and sponsored content is nothing new (and can often get rather heated). I've never really spoken about it because as a blog reader I know the way the world works and that product placement and PR exists, even prior to the word of blogging (being raised by a marketeer will do that to you). And as a blogger I know what a difference it makes in creating content on a larger scale. Samples allow bloggers/YouTubers to create varied content and sponsored posts give the possibility to do what we love most - creating content on a full time basis.

On Thursday I posted a sponsored video on YouTube. Completely in line with the new advice released in the recent ASA articles. Before this article I was always very transparent anyway, and would always post whether I'd paid for an item or whether I was being paid to talk about it. I have nothing to hide - I get sent samples for consideration and am occasionally paid to make content. Simples.

When I created sponsored blog content prior to this, I always posted "sponsored" before the text (so you can make an informed decision before clicking) and disclaimed it at the end. With sponsored content on YouTube (all THREE videos - woah, slow down) I disclaimed it and posted "sponsored" on the first few seconds of the clips to allow for Xbox/mobile users, as well as in the description box. Now the only difference is that I need to move my disclaimer to the top. There's also discussion on having AD in the title (something my YT network hasn't said is 100% yet as there's debate over varying levels of sponsored content and the comparison to the rules of other media) but I'm still doing it regardless. Very little has changed and I don't mind at all.

I love making beautiful content, wether I'm being paid to do it or not. And although I generally am asked to make it for other channels, occasionally I might be offered the chance to work with a brand, featuring some of their products in my videos. Opinions are always honest and I will never say anything I don't mean and if the items are clothing then I pick what I want to wear myself. In every case I spend twice as long working on a branded video because I want it to be extra enjoyable and not be tainted by the fact that it's sponsored. I want to make every video with the same, if not more love than the last, and want you to enjoy it as a result. Regardless of whether it's a brand video or not.

Back to the video I posted on Thursday... (went off on a tangent there!) I posted a sponsored video in a completely transparent way. I'd spent over 24 hours (not straight - there's not enough coffee in the world) working on that video and worked hard to get it to a standard that I was happy with before releasing it. I'd posted two sponsored videos in my YouTube life (2 years) previous to this and had never received some of the comments that I received on this one video. Some were just disgusting and were deleted straight away, but some were both interesting and negative at the same time, but gave me the kick I needed to write this, as I have so much I want to say.

"Everything is sponsored" - For my channel this is simply not true. Sometimes I think there might be confusion that being sent a PR sample means that your opinion isn't honest and means that you are paid to say good things. I could make endless videos on products I don't like, but I don't want to sound like a whiney bitch on the internet (my boyfriend deals with this enough at home - but you shouldn't have to!), I have far more creative and lovely videos I would rather make and invest my time in. There are countless charity bags of things I am sent that I don't ask for and don't want/like and I'm not contracted to talk about any of them.

(Just whilst we're on that I very rarely ask for a product - sometimes I contact brands to see if they have any spare samples of sets for Christmas gift guides as I'm not made of money, but this is only with PR's that I have a close relationship with already. I never send shopping lists or blanket emails.)

"Sponsored content changes a YouTuber" -I personally like to think that working with a brand pushes me to make my content better. Making the occasional video for a brand hasn't changed me as a person and doesn't change any of the content I make outside of that one video. Simples.

"Sponsored content is uncreative/lazy" - Lots of people aren't happy with the types of video that sponsored content appears in. This can be down to the YouTubers personal preference, but can also requested by the brand. There are varying levels of freedom depending on a campaign or brand and as it's very rarely talked about, it's not something a lot of people know about. I've also never met a single YouTuber who makes a certain video just because it's easy. They all have varying levels of difficulty, but I've never come across an easy video.

These were just a few things that I saw in my comments this week and that I have seen thrown about countless times in the past few years. It's a shame to see honesty over sponsored content be met with negative responses, especially when a creator spends so much time working on one video. I'm truly thankful to those of you who love the content I make (seriously, thank you) and understand that I can't pay my bills with eyeshadow samples. You are all babes and I hope this posts clears up maybe a few things that some of you have wondered yourselves.

  1. I personally think you're one of the best YouTubers because you really are open and straightforward with your viewers. I'm happy to support you and for those that sent you nasty comments, shame on them. The kind of job you have is special and I really want you to know that out of all the sponsored videos I've seen, yours have been the most enjoyable. Keep up your amazing work and again thank you for being so upfront about this when so many YouTubers shy away from the subject.

  2. You're definitely one of my fave Youtubers & I agree sponsored opportunities can change some however you've not changed in a bad way at all! :) p.s your eyeliner alwayss looks amazing!

  3. Some people are just so picky and like to moan about the great things others are doing, you are an amazing youtuber and blogger and work so hard, you deserve to be paid and be able to make money from your blog and youtube! Really I don't see why anyone should be bothered about sponsored content as long as it's honest and genuine, you do a fabulous job and shouldn't be brought down by the negativity of others!

  4. It's great that you're bringing this topic up. I personally don't mind sponsored content once in a while. x

  5. So well said! I tried to explain it in a video however I think you have got it 100% right..hopefully this helps those who like to be negative!x

  6. I don't mind sponsored content every now and again. I think the more I see it, the more I start believing it isn't true, guess it's about product placement x

  7. You are definitely someone I see as having a lot of integrity and being very honest in your opinions, so it definitely bothers me that people are giving you a hard time. I have to say as a viewer, I roll my eyes every time audile or nature box is mentioned, but when it comes to working with brands that someone is already a fan of - who would honestly say no to that opportunity?

None of the comments you've listed above even relate to you, though I'm sure you don't need my reassurance. I hope you don't let them get to you too much - keep doing what you're doing! x

  8. The only time I'm bothered by sponsored content/PR samples is when it isn't disclosed. I will still watch a sponsored video or read a sponsored post, but it feels wrong when someone suddenly starts talking about how awesome cheap workout clothing brand X is when they were wearing nothing but Lululemon before.

I love how you disclose on your videos! I can't believe that people got so frustrated.

  9. This is a very insightful post and I love hearing your perspective. I find nothing wrong with a sponsored post if you truly love the brand/company/product. Like you said, no one can pay their bills with samples. Keep up the amazing work on your blog and YT channel! I support you 100%.

  10. This is a really meaningful post! Personally I feel that earning a little money from your blog is not wrong at all, especially when all your opinions are honest and straightforward! Ignore those nasty comments Suzie, I'll always support you! :)

  11. I have been watching you for a while now and did see that video that was sponsored by Marks & Spencer, I also noted that only the outfit was sponsored. I personally don't understand all the negativity. I think it sometimes boils down to envy, because you get free stuff sent to you and get paid to do what you love while most people have to deal with "real work in a real office". I think in this day and age, people still don't consider working from home a real job. Well, it is. As a blogger and YouTuber myself, I look forward to the day when I would also be contacted by sponsors because the reality is, it's expensive to keep buying things yourself and it also doesn't help that we have bills to pay. I look forward to the day when I can quit my day job and be a blogger full time because that is what I enjoy doing. I think it also comes from the deceptiveness of some YouTubers who do not do proper disclosures and sort of "trick" their subbies into buying things that actually suck.

I for one support you all the way. Good job!

  12. I think your blog and youtube channel is great. I can definitely see the effort you put into it. The haters gonna hate, hate, hate! What can you do! People see blogging and youtube as a hobby, and they think that youtube on its own is paying millions or something! I don't think they understand that many bloggers make their money off sponsored content. And whats the difference between them watching someone on a youtube video talking up a product, and watching a commercial on tv selling them the same thing. Advertising is everywhere you look, including youtube! Keep doing what you do!

  13. Like others have said, as long as the products you are saying are good / great actually are then it shouldn't bother anyone whether you are being paid for it or not. I'm sure you and other bloggers have more integrity than the majority of actors and celebs being paid to do TV adverts etc and no one is sending hate mail to them about it. The problem with the Internet is very sad and hateful people are given a platform to say whatever they want, stuff that they would never have the balls to say to your face. Don't let them drag you down. On a side note you look very like the beautiful Lucy Watson from MIC in that photo 😊

  14. I think it's great you talked about this. I think that people make such a big deal about the sponsored content. They also think when it's sponsored that the blogger/vlogger is not sincere about the product anymore. I don't think you should feel down because of these comments because a lot more people like all the content you post. You're a great blogger!

  15. When you work as hard on a blog / channel as you do, it's only fair to get paid every once in a while. Also, a lot of people forget that you (as a full time blogger / YouTuber) need money to buy cosmetics and other related items (such as equipment) to actually keep doing what you do. This is as much of a job as any other office job out there - however, every blogger should indeed inform readers whether a post is sponsored or not.

I blog myself, and occasionally get sent some items too, but I always make sure to inform my readers a product was given to me. It's only fair to that.

    Jimmy |

  16. I have to strongly disagree with all those negative comments! I personally think as long as someone is telling you the truth about a product, then just because it's a pr sample doesn't matter to me! You can look up plenty of reviews if you think a blogger is lying anyway! Transparency is great, don't get me wrong, but I don't think that writing a video is sponsored should evoke negative comments. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a blogger getting paid for something they've worked hard on! You can just never please some people!
    Jodie // La Lune Song

  17. I really don't get all the hate you got on that video. People often don't realize you need to pay the bills to and you obviously can't do that with make-up samples. You're one of the few blogs I read because you still put the * behind products that were send to you. Bloggers like Essiebutton are being called out on that all the time, but they just ignore it. Way to lose followers. I did notice in your Marks & Spencers video you put the * behind the Nars eyeshadow, but in a post about it a few months ago you didn't. Did you buy them yourself or were they send to you and did Nars ask you not to tell it was a pr sample? Normally that would've irritated me, but you gave a honest review about them, which proofs my point about you. You're one of the few honest blogs out there Suzie, please stay that way :) I really love your blog.

  18. You truly are one of my favorite youtubers and bloggers as you are always so honest about the things you post and always work so hard on everything:)
Keep up the good work and don't listen to the haters!!!

  19. Love that you wrote this post, your opinions are always honest and you can tell that in your videos x

  20. This is why I newer got into doing youtube even if it looks like fun. There are to many old farts out there moaning and just being stupid. I think it was Wayne Goss that researched and said in a video that most of the hate comment came from middle-aged people that should know better.

I do not mind sponsored products, most people I watch on youtube or am reading their blogs are open and honest about their opinions/sponsorship etc. I can not believe some twats do not understand that most people do not have hundred to thousand of pounds to spend on beauty/clothes etc. each month. Content cost a lot of money and a heck load of time to create. Sponsorship is a nice way of trying out lot off new products and even earn a bit of money without needing to sell off you organs.

Btw. why are only beauty/fashion you tubers getting all the hate? There are so many guys on youtube that get sent everything from accessories, phones to Computer that are worth a lot more than a couple off lipsticks and blushes ever will be. Most of them even end up keeping a lot of the expensive stuff.....

  21. You're probably one of the only youtubers I can actually sit down and watch! I love the fact that your videos are so down to earth and honest.
My opinion is that if you are BEIG sent samples and asked to do sponsored posts - great! It means that brands consider your blog/YouTube successful and want to reach out to your audience.
I'm starting to think that a lot of this backlash is jealousy from those who aren't as successful and aren't getting the sort of opportunities that you and other blogger/youtubers are.

Don't let them get to you. Keep up the good work!

    Jessica. xx

  22. Just ignore the bad comments :) What I'm most interested to see how this effects is the really big vloggers who seem to be the worst at labeling sponsored content (even when it's obvious). I feel like a lot more of their videos are about to have these disclaimers on!
    Megan x

  23. I think this needed to be said and am very proud of just how you said it. You stated facts and gave your opinion in a very professional way, unlike a few other YouTubers and bloggers x

  24. It is great that you have been so transparent in the descriptions and executions of your videos as to which ones have been sponsored. I think its a shame that due to some youtubers not being as transparent that everyone gets tarred with the same brush. I can understand why people are bored and upset with those youtubers that churn out sponsored video after sponsored video. I'm sure you can understand how it comes across!

  25. As long as you are still honest to your readers about your products, then I don't really mind sponsored posts.

  26. Such a good article Susie! Totally agree with what you are saying.

  27. Hell, we all need to make a living!

    Good on you,

  28. When I see sponsored content from you, which you always mark super clearly, I'm happy for you! It means that brands want to to work with you, which is a great thing. You're doing everything right, there are just always people out there who have troubles in their own lives and use the internet to take that out on others. Don't let them get you down, and don't change a thing to please them!

  29. Thanks so much for posting this! I've watched your channel for a long time and you have always been very clear when disclosing sponsored products/videos and I think you should be congratulated for adopting the new regulatory arrangements so quickly. There are many, many beauty Youtubers that don't disclaim at all and I really appreciate your honesty. Well done :-)

  30. I really don't know why so many people are up in arms about it. I've been sent a few little things as a blogger, and every time I'm contacted by someone, they always express very clearly that whether I want to do a post/what I write in a post is completely my own discretion. No one is sending you things, or paying you, to explicitly write something, and it's hard to understand how some people don't see that. I love your videos, and I love that brands have enough faith in you to sponsor or send you things! Keep up the good work! (And as Tay says, the haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate ;) )

  31. sponsored content is a reality for anyone that wants to seriously pursue this kind of work! people need to wake up and realise that in order for you to be able to pour your heart into your content, you really need to eat. and if blogging/making videos is your job, of course you need to get paid one way or another!

you dealt with this in such an eloquent way suzie and i admire you for that magnificently. just keep on keeping on and i dare say the majority of us will stay with you, sponsored content or not :)

    - katy,

  32. Hi! I don't have much to say about the subject, other than I personally don't care if you do sponsored videos or not. I didn't find you GRWM video to be any different than any of the others you post (and I love your videos.) So, keep doing sponsored content if that is what you want to do. You aren't obligated to not do it just because a few rude people on the internet got pissy, and I wish viewers would understand that better.
Besides, that outfit was hella cute. If I lived in the UK or if Marks & Spencer existed in Canada, I'd be all over everything you wore.
So, keep doing what you do! I'd rather you have some sponsored content and be able to continue making videos than for you to disappear. I adore them (and you!) too much!

  33. I personally have no problem with sponsored content, as long as it is stated. I do believe that you're trying your best to give the most honest opinion. Samples and sponsored contents are a part of this blogging world and people should just try and accept that. No need to accuse someone of lying about the quality of the product and make yourself look rude. I myself always look for multiple reviews of the same product if I'm very interested in it, because I believe nothing works for everyone and I never want to blindly trust someone.

  34. I completely agree with ALL of this! The reality is that blogging (& vlogging I'm sure) is a very rewarding but extremely time consuming hobby. It is nice to get recognised for your hard work every so often.

Also, I like to talk about fashion and beauty, but I do not have the budget to buy things that I really like just for review purposes. As a student I can't buy everything I like the look of. The odd PR sample makes life that little bit easier for bloggers and vloggers. It does not mean that the review will be dishonest, that would be cheating ourselves. I will not review something just for the sake of filling a space in my blogging schedule.

I have absolutely no problem with fellow bloggers & vloggers using PR samples, it wouldn't change my view of them one bit, why would it if they are being honest?

    Well done for posting this!

  35. It's a shame people have to be so disgruntled by sponsored media - bloggers need to make a living too and if a sponsored post that's in line with the style of the blog appears, then it shouldn't be that much of a problem; it shows the blogger is being recognised for their work!

It's great to see that you've always been so straight with your sponsored content, and it's a crazy thing with all the new guidelines but people shouldn't be so judgemental unless blogs just post anything without real thought about their brand

  36. I've always had the impression you've been 100% honest with your opinions, and your content always has the same feel. Never like it's been tampered with by another company pressuring you and your views.
I personally feel that bloggers/youtubers shouldn't be persecuted when it takes so much time, effort and money over the years to bring content to people.
Receiving some money for a project you firstly agree with/like the products and secondly are working to the same standard as all your other content should not be a problem, unless it's for a crappy product you obviously don't really believe in. Which would be quite random and apparent I think.
It gives you a stepping stone in your career, lets you be promoted by a big brand and earns you money which will more than likely be put back into equipment/content for the whole process again anyway.
I definitely think it can be a jealousy thing.
And I don't think requesting a product is bad if you feel it will go with your content as that's what they provide that service for! Win-win situation.
I think people sometimes forget that to always have fresh content and regular content you need resources aka new products, equipment, money for basics! Bills!! If you're putting your full time into that then something has to give. (I know you work but I mean in general)
The whole ad thing in the titles is annoying though because it can give a false perception before watching which can kill the mood when generally videos are still really good.
I just wish more youtubers were speaking out about why the videos have 'Ad' in them as a lot of subbies get confused.

    Great post :)

  37. I absolutely agree with you. I have no problem with YouTubers/bloggers making sponsored content. I want the content creators I love to be able to afford to continue creating. However, I do expect bloggers/vloggers to clearly label sponsored content so the audience can be fully informed about whatever they are endorsing. There are always going to be those that don't like sponsored content but unless they're ready to pony up and pay for content themselves, I say ignore them. You seem to have set up good guidelines for yourself and you make great content!

  38. You are the babe! Big virtual hug :)

  39. I don't know why so many people hold such a strong hate towards sponsored posts. I know that a lot of YouTubers have kinda ruined the 'sponsored' content but that doesn't mean every sponsored video deserve hate. I believe as long as the content is still up to the standards to other videos, 100% honest as always, then what's the matter? Some viewers are just so jealous or judgemental when it comes to sponsorship.
As a YouTuber/Blogger I know how upset you would be hearing these negative feedback after working so hard on the sponsored content! :( Just keep doing what you do Suzie, you're doing ana amazing job! There's nothing we could do to lots of negative viewers, they don't know how much hard work is going through all the behind scene, and some others are just purely negative about lots of things and nothing could change them...
    Sending some virtual hugs xxx

  40. Don't worry about the haters
    - Just keep doing you!

  41. Be true to yourself and believe in your heart Suzi. You have made it this far by doing what you love and believed in so don't let that drive and passion change. I followed my dream and am very proud of what I achieved with my goal so you keep chasing yours, be yourself and have no regrets. I want you to look back at these days and say to yourelf "wow did I really do all of that?" <3

  42. Your honesty makes your blog and you behind it even more enjoyable. I've never seen any bad in sponsored posts and, like Marieke said, people who love reading you are probably all glad to see that you're being recognised by brands and can therefore produce more content for your readers... I mean, if you had to pay everything by yourself, would you really be able to post that much?!

  43. It's great that you're so open about sponsored content. As a reader I sometimes feel duped by blogs if sponsorship is declared at the very bottom of a post. Imo. readers should know this first and then decide whether to read it or not. The way you handle sponsored content is therefore perfect!

  44. Being honest is the difference between a blog being a corporate brand and actually realising there is a human being behind the screen. How else are viewers suppose to expect to have a video from you nearly everyday if no money is contributed. People have to make a living somehow and I am jealous it is doing something that you love. Well done :)

  45. I'm so glad you talked about this suzy, not because i was annoyed about sponsered posts, but i think that people are throwing there comments around about sponsered posts abit harshly. As a marketing major, it opens your eyes up to the fact that marketing is everywhere, and most people dont realise it, as there arent the regulations everywhere telling you that you need to tell people your advertising. I think that brands working with youtubers and bloggers is exciting for both parties, and that youtube has become such a success that companies would be crazy not to jump into it. I think its so refreshing how transparent you are about it and open to discussion about it you are, rather than just go on the defensive. Your still making beautiful content that we can enjoy, and the fact that you can get sponsered for certain posts is positive and pushes video ideas and content. The relationsip you have built up with your readers and viewers is great, and im excited for the direction that youtube and blogging can go in the future. p.s I really enjoy your blogs and videos, thanks for being so honest.

  46. I really don't mind sponsored posts at all, as long as people are honest about them which you are. I'd just like to know whether or not someone is sponsored whether it be on YouTube or blogs, I'm not against them at all as I know they're beneficial for both the sender and receiver.

I've always appreciated that you've been honest!

    Beauty and Lifestyle Blog

  47. I think that the viewers who have such negative comments about sponsored content, maybe they don't understand what it means. What it means to them as a viewer, or you as a blogger/vlogger.

  48. Other commenterss who mention that you speak the "truth" fail to keep in mind that whether a product is "great" or "awful" is a matter of personal opinion. You have your opinion, I have mine. What you think is great in your opinion may be awful in my opinion.

The important thing, in my opinion, is to be transparent. And do it at the beginning of the post or the video, not at the end.

I read many blogs, and have yet to come across a sponsored post in which a negative review is given. Have you, yourself, ever posted a negative review of a comp'd or sponsored product?

One blogger explained that her policy is to decline to write a review of a product that she views negatively. Her thinking was "It's better to say nothing at all than to say something negative". I'm not sure that I agree with her line of thinking on this subject. I think if bloggers WOULD post negative reviews, readers would be more likely to believe them when they post positive reviews.

On the other hand, I can see why you might not want to do that. If I receive a comp'd or sponsored product, and post a negative review of it, the next company might think twice about offering me product or a sponsorship.

I very much appreciate those bloggers who state right at the top whether the post is sponsored. I can then choose to read it or not. It is frustrating to me to read a post, only to find out at the end that the blogger was paid to write about the product. It's as though I was force-fed a commercial. I don't like that and have begun to weed out blogs that routinely place their disclosure at the end of their post or video.
