It’s no secret that I’m a coat junkie, no matter what outfit you throw on they are the one piece that can give that look a whole new vibe. Whether it’s something androgynous that gives a girly piece that edge, or a blazer that takes your look from casual to business chic. More recently I’ve been a huge fan of aviator jackets – after a month of obsessing I ended up purchasing two! They’re the only coats I’ve been flitting between, despite being the same design, the colours mean each one creates a totally different look.
Obviously not everyone is a coat hoarder and will own more than one shade, so it’s important to pick the right one. Black aviator jackets are like cosy biker jackets, they give a more sleek and smart look, pairing nicely with everyday outfits as well as evening attire – everything from your gym outfit to a sequin dress. Camel or sandy shades are quite the contrast, working better with neutral knitwear and cosy bobble hats. Grey makes for a nice in between colouring but is a little harder to come buy – but honestly, how I wish I’d ordered the one I spotted in the Topshop black Friday sale! There are also the reds and greens of the Acne inspired aviators which I’m totally head over heels in love with – basically, I’ll take one in every colour please!
Proportions are another thing to keep in mind when wearing an aviator jacket. Most are made to be oversized (often it’s worth sizing down if you’re not a fan), and consequently will need to be worn with something a little tighter on the bottom half. Skinny jeans and leggings, mini skirts and tights ect. There’s still something to be said for a good pair of distressed boyfriend jeans, but it’s harder to get right, and not something that makes you instantly feel put together – in this case looking laid back takes a lot more work. Another option is a high neck jumper dress and over the knee boots – a look I am totally in love with and one that has a new pair of OTK’s on my current wish list.
